Featured Dadpreneur – Dr. Lucas Lu of 5 Miles Peer-To-Peer Marketplace

By Featured Dadpreneurs

Dr. Lucas Lu of 5miles, a peer-to-peer marketplace (think Craigslist-meets-Nextdoor) with 15+ million buyers and sellers across the country (NYT: Decluttering? Yes, There’s an App).

Lucas, who’s a serial entrepreneur and e-commerce veteran (formerly with Alibaba), has a 10-year-old son and an international business that has him shuttling between Dallas, his home base, and Beijing, where key investors and technical resources are located. While being on the road — and away from one’s family — can be challenging, he suggests three things to dads like him to make it more manageable.

  • Quality time: When you’re together, make it count.
  • No excuses: It’s easier than ever to stay connected, so make it happen.
  • Divide and conquer: Work as a team with—and support—your spouse.

For Lucas, spending quality time with his son means taking him on father-son adventures, such as road trips to unforgettable places like Big Bend National Park. When traveling abroad, Lucas takes full advantage of technology services like Skype to talk daily with his son—a highlight in both of their days. And he and his wife work hand-in-hand to divvy up and support each other in their respective and joint parental responsibilities so the partnership is solid and their son has “surround sound” parenting.
